Mississippi Corrections Institution Release Paths
The Mississippi Department of Corrections is the statewide receiving system for state sentences. Lawrence County has a Community Corrections office, but the official MDOC directory does not list a prison in the county. A defendant sentenced to MDOC may be housed in any assigned state, regional, or other authorized facility. That person is not a local jail detainee merely because Lawrence County was the county of conviction.
A person can leave secure MDOC confinement through parole, Earned Release Supervision, a tentative release process, or maximum discharge. Parole follows a discretionary Mississippi State Parole Board decision. ERS lets a qualifying person serve the remaining part under MDOC community supervision. Maximum discharge is the end point without early-release allowances, subject to valid credit and sentence corrections. Transfer between institutions is not release to the community.
| MDOC event | Custody meaning | Record to check |
|---|---|---|
| Institution transfer | Secure state custody continues elsewhere | Current MDOC location and movement record |
| Parole | Conditional community release under supervision | Board action and MDOC Parolee Search |
| ERS | Community placement under MDOC jurisdiction | MDOC computation and supervision record |
| Maximum discharge | Sentence reaches its calculated end | Discharge certificate or Records response |
Confirm Mississippi Corrections Institution Releases
The correct first route is the MDOC Inmate Search. Search by MDOC number when known, then by exact first and last name. Open the matching detail result and compare date of birth, sentence facts, and county of conviction. Lawrence County can appear as the conviction county even when Location names a prison in another part of Mississippi. A listed institution is evidence of current state placement, not release.
- Enter the MDOC number or exact name in the statewide inmate search.
- Match the identity fields, sentence, and Lawrence County conviction connection.
- Read Location and Tentative Release Date together, without treating the date as guaranteed.
- Run the separate MDOC Parolee Search by name or ID, then narrow by city or county.
- Request a discharge certificate or Records Department response when final release must be documented.
A current parolee result is positive evidence of conditional community release. It does not prove that the sentence has ended. Likewise, an inmate-search miss does not prove release from either MDOC or Lawrence County Jail. A spelling mismatch, record limit, another custodian, or restricted information may explain the result. The Lawrence County release search path covers county, court, state, notification, and federal checks when custody type is uncertain.
VINELink and Mississippi SAVIN add notification for MDOC and participating county records. They are useful for a pending transfer or release event but do not replace the state sentence record. A transfer notice means the person may still be confined. If a federal or immigration detainer is involved, continue through the receiving federal system instead of treating the MDOC departure as community release.
MDOC Search Fields for Lawrence County
MDOC detail pages can show the photograph, MDOC number, physical descriptors, entry date, current location and unit, location-change date, number and total length of sentences, offense, sentence length, sentence date, county of conviction, and Tentative Release Date. The state’s exact visible label is important. It is not a guaranteed release date or a final discharge date.
The official MDOC example detail record demonstrates the fields without establishing facts about a Lawrence County subject. Its captured layout appears below.
The screen ties identity, sentence county, location, and the tentative date together. Use that full set to avoid confusing people with similar names.
- Tentative Release Date
- The current anticipated MDOC date after qualifying adjustments.
- Maximum discharge
- The expected end of the state sentence without early-release allowances.
- Parole eligibility
- The earliest possible point for Board consideration, not a release order.
- Discharge certificate
- An official MDOC document supporting final sentence discharge.
Mississippi Corrections Release Records
A public search screen may not preserve a simple released or discharged badge for every former state prisoner. When the state record is unclear, request an identifiable document. MDOC identifies its Records Department at P.O. Box 24388, Jackson, MS 39225, with telephone 601-933-2889 and MDOCRecordsDepartment@mdoc.state.ms.us. The department handles offender time, jail credit, and eligibility-date matters. Telephone contact can route a question, but MDOC says public-record inspection and copy requests must be written.
Use the current records process linked from the MDOC general-public page. Supply the MDOC number, full name, Lawrence County as the county of conviction when applicable, approximate sentence date, and the exact record sought. Useful requests can name a public time sheet, offender data sheet, discharge certificate, release date and type, or jail-credit record. A narrow request avoids confidential classification, medical, victim, security, or supervision narratives that do not answer the release question.

Written public-record requests required
Mississippi Public Records Act procedures may apply to existing nonexempt agency records, while statutory and agency rules govern production, costs, and withholding. Ask for any denial or redaction basis in writing.
Pre-sentence jail credit questions often require both state and county documents. The MDOC handbook says qualifying credit must relate to the cause for which the person is incarcerated and must not be duplicated. Lawrence County sentencing and jail records supply the local inputs. If the public date appears wrong, compare the MDOC time sheet with those source records and route the correction through the case manager or Records Department.
MDOC Release Dates in Lawrence County
MDOC computes sentence milestones from the judicial term, concurrent or consecutive structure, offense and sentence dates, mandatory minimums, habitual status, exclusions, and valid pre-sentence jail credit. Under Miss. Code Ann. § 47-5-138 and related law, earned time and ERS may affect qualifying cases. MDOC’s public 85-percent institutional and 15-percent ERS example is not universal. Conduct, classification, exclusions, and an approved Mississippi residence still matter.
A date can change due to credit correction, earned-time accrual or forfeiture, disciplinary action, sentence modification, a newly recognized consecutive sentence, a detainer, a parole or ERS decision, or recalculation after a return to custody. Parole eligibility under § 47-7-3 also depends on the individual sentence and offense. A broad percentage should never replace the official time sheet.
For a full treatment of those milestones, see the Lawrence County Projected Release Date page. County jail sentences without MDOC custody require the Sheriff’s applied calculation and should not inherit state formulas.
Lawrence County MDOC Supervision
A release from an MDOC institution may lead to Community Corrections rather than full discharge. The Lawrence Probation & Parole Office is at 6013 Highway 587, Robinwood Road, Monticello, MS 39654, with 601-587-1316 and fax 601-587-8078. It is not a prison or local jail. It serves as a reporting and verification point for parole, probation, ERS, house arrest, and other assigned state supervision.
The supervision county may reflect the approved residence rather than the county of conviction. Search the statewide parolee tool first, then ask the local office for the correct public channel. Staff may explain a public result and route an official request, but protected case notes may remain confidential. A supervised person has left secure confinement but can remain in MDOC legal custody.
Parole itself comes from the Mississippi State Parole Board, not the local Community Corrections office. The Board may grant, deny, defer, rescind, or revoke. A grant is not the physical release timestamp because planning, detainers, and processing can remain. Match the Board action with the later MDOC movement or supervision record before stating that the person left an institution.
Note: Use the MDOC number across inmate, parolee, and records checks; it is a safer match than a common name alone.
After Mississippi Corrections Institution Release
MDOC’s Inmate Handbook and Family and Friends Guide describe state discharge planning. A case manager reviews travel plans and may arrange a bus ticket to the destination or nearest city, though the guide excludes out-of-state ticket purchase. MDOC also requires a discharge certificate. If funds remain in the inmate account, the guide routes that issue to Premier Services at 601-326-2590. These are state corrections processes, not Lawrence County Jail policies.
A detainer can change the destination. A person may leave one MDOC institution and enter the custody of another state, federal, county, or immigration authority. The movement record should identify that transfer. When a release notice says transfer, follow the receiving agency before describing the person as back in the community. BOP and ICE maintain separate locator systems, while USMS may control federal pretrial movements.
Final state discharge is best shown by the certificate or official MDOC Records response. If parole, ERS, or probation continues, the community supervision record explains the status that follows secure confinement.
